Resources for USC News Editors and Authors
Category/Tagging Dos and Don’ts
- School Names
Only use the name of a school or unit as a tag if the story is about news specific to the functioning or organization of that school. For example, the creation of a new division or the selection of a new dean for that school. Do not use the name of a school as a tag if a story happens to be about a faculty member or student from that school.
- Individuals’ Names
Only use someone’s name as a tag if the person is particularly prominent or there’s a significant body of work about them. Examples: Barack Obama, Eric Garcetti, David Petraeus.
- Avoid Tag Redundancy
Make sure that a similar tag doesn’t already exist before adding a new tag.
