Category descriptions

We use categories that are outwardly focused, based on the reader’s perspective, rather than focusing on how USC is structured via schools and departments. Stories may be listed in multiple categories, but not more than two.

Across All Digital Media

These are the categories used across all USC University Communications media (including USC News and USC Trojan Family Magazine):

  • Arts – Use this category for articles pertaining to fine and performing arts, as well as cinema. They’re frequently related to USC Roski School of Art and Design and USC Kaufman School of Dance.
  • Athletics – Use this category for articles pertaining to sports, including coaches, facilities and student-athletes, even if they are not part of the USC Athletics entity.
  • Business – Use this category for articles pertaining to business, economy, employment, business leadership and labor, including programs and activities related to USC Marshall School of Business.
  • Health – Use this category for articles pertaining to medicine, projects and research including programs and activities related to Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC, Keck School of Medicine of USC, USC School of Pharmacy, etc.
  • Humanities – Use this category for articles pertaining to the humanities disciplines such as history, literature and anthropology, as well as pieces about what it means to be human. You’ll often see it associated with stories on programs and activities related to USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences,but other schools and institutes may have appropriate stories as well.
  • Policy/Law – Use this category for articles pertaining to government, policy, politics and law. These frequently include programs and activities related to USC Gould School of Law and USC Price School of Public Policy.
  • Science/Technology – Use this category for articles pertaining to STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). These often include programs and activities related to USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences and USC Viterbi School of Engineering, but other schools may have appropriate stories as well.
  • Social Impact – Use this category for articles pertaining to education, psychology, community outreach and social work. These stories are about how USC research and activity improves the welfare of our society. Topics often include programs and activities related to USC Rossier School of Education, USC Price School of Public Policy and USC School of Social Work, but other schools may have appropriate stories as well.
  • University – Use this category for articles pertaining to academics, campus programs, faculty and staff, announcements about new recruits and administrators, special events and student life (alumni and current).
  • Video – This is a functional category in addition to the topical categories above. Use this category for posts that contain a video as the primary form of content. Selecting the Video category changes the post’s thumbnail to clearly indicate that it’s a video.

Specific Digital Media

These are additional categories used exclusively in USC Trojan Family Magazine, as its audience is specific to alumni, parents of students and donors:

  • Alumni Life – Use this category for articles about the achievements, companies, families, ventures, personalities and expert opinions of USC alumni. These posts often include (but are not exclusive to) opportunities and benefits available to alumni through the USC Alumni Association.
  • President’s Page – Use this category for first-person posts by the USC university president, C. L. Max Nikias.
  • Student Life – Use this category for articles about achievements, ventures, events, profiles and the daily life of current USC students. These posts may include (but are not exclusive to) stories involving USC Student Affairs.
